Welcome to Tønsberg, Norway’s oldest town and its very own Viking capital. Here, history is not something you simply observe, it is something you step into, touch, smell and help bring to life. Join Saga Oseberg, a replica of the Oseberg Viking ship, on a journey into the past.

Normally, a trip to a museum involves a look-but-don’t-touch approach, but a trip aboard Saga Oseberg is a full sensory immersion. Here, you do not join as a passenger, but rather as a part of a fully-fledged Viking crew. Feel the weight of the oars and the creak of the timber beneath you and let the earthy scent of the wool sail, fresh-cut wood and tar transport you straight into the 9th century.

“As part of the Oseberg Viking Heritage Foundation, Saga Oseberg is a living museum,” says project leader Ole Harald Flåten, who oversees the foundation’s vast volunteer-driven efforts.

The Oseberg Viking heritage extends far beyond the ship itself. Visitors can both witness and try authentic Viking crafts, watch skilled artisans at work, or even take part in building a new ship, namely the replica of the famous Gokstad vessel currently under construction. “We also offer guided experiences across Vestfold’s rich archaeological landscape, bringing context to the region’s burial mounds, trading hubs and power centres,” Flåten explains.

Moored by the docks, a visit aboard the ship is free and access is easy. As part of a wider attempt to broaden the reach and accessibility of the Viking heritage, Oseberg Viking Heritage Foundation hosts a free Viking festival each August filled with hands-on activities: boatbuilding, textile demonstrations, smithing, lectures, Viking music and even glima, the traditional form of Viking wrestling.

“International archaeologists from places like Isle of Man and Scotland also join the programme with lectures, adding depth and global context to the Viking story, and helping us build ties and relations to other places where the Vikings left their mark.”

Saga Oseberg is part of Vikingveien (The Viking Route), a broader experience that is being developed through a network linking sites, stories and landscapes from the fjord to the mountains. More than a route, Vikingveien is a living collaboration that ties together heritage environments, museums, communities and natural areas to present the Viking Age as a connected whole.
But here in Tønsberg, it all comes together most vividly. Whether you join a voyage, learn a craft or explore the historic shoreline, Saga Oseberg invites you into a world where the Viking Age is not past, but present, tangible and wonderfully alive.
