Åsa Söderman is the knitwear designer behind Åsa Tricosa, a brand created with a passion for seamless, wearable and well-fitting Ziggurat sweaters, cardigans, shawls and gloves. The knit-as-you-go designs have a top-down approach with clever built-in details – no seaming, no endless ends.

Back in 2010, Åsa Söderman developed a special knitting technique, Ziggurat, that soon caught on in the international knitting community. Selling her patterns on Ravelry, providing tutorials and publishing two books about Ziggurat, Söderman has become somewhat of an international name in knitting and regularly organises workshops in Scandinavia, France, Germany, the UK and the US.

Ziggurat is a method of knitting a sweater or a cardigan without having to cut the yarn. “By carefully thinking through the construction of the garment during the design process, it’s possible to find a way to continue knitting everything in one piece, from the top down. When it’s finished, you’ll have only six threads to attach – like magic,” she says. “It never ceases to amaze me how something as simple as knitting can transform a one-dimensional thread into a 3D-shaped piece.”

The designer works sculpturally, almost architecturally, and her customers must simply trust the pattern – which they clearly do! “My patterns are inspired by craftsmanship, but they are not constructed in a traditional way,” she says. “They are not for beginners but rather for someone ready for the next challenge, with unexpected and fun details. You can even use different details in the patterns to mix and match designs, like a modular system: a pocket from one design, an overlapping hem from another, a seamless lined hem from yet another, and so on.”

On a mission to offer designs that ultimately make women feel good, most of Åsa Tricosa’s sweaters are tailored, as she is not fond of ill-fitting, oversize garments. Above all, she makes sure that the sweater or cardigan fits nicely over the shoulders – for a beautiful silhouette. “The garments should feel comfortable to wear, but also be flattering.”

Originally from Sweden, and by way of the US, the UK, Singapore and Germany, these days Söderman is based in a picturesque small town in Denmark with her husband. Here, she continues to work on her craft, playing with designs and using locally produced yarn when possible. “The knitting community is strong, respecting old traditions whilst welcoming modern thinking,” Söderman adds. “It’s a passion project. Knitting is better than scrolling, is my motto.”
