Winner of the prestigious Luigi Michaletti Award and named Most Surprising Museum Visit, the museum dedicated to the famous composer Carl Nielsen, with his great symphonies and folk melodies, offers unexpected musical experiences for the whole family.

In the modern Carl Nielsen Museum in Odense, housed in the same building as the Odense Concert Hall and the Odense Symphony Orchestra, the life and work of the world-famous composer are brought to life. Here, music itself is the most important object.

First established in 1988, Carl Nielsen Museum opened as a classic composer museum. In 2023, it reopened as something modern and interactive, after an extensive renovation. The following year, the museum won the prestigious Luigi Micheletti Award, presented by the European Museum Academy, for its outstanding storytelling and innovative presentation. It was also named Most Surprising Museum Visit by DR’s P2 program Aftryk (Impressions).

A visit to the Carl Nielsen Museum provides insight into the story of Denmark’s greatest and most productive composer, who was just as committed to renewing folk songs as he was to developing great concert music.

Each displayed object tells a story from the composer’s life through music.

The museum brings his story to life through experiences that awaken the senses. Sounds, stories and creative activities give visitors the opportunity to explore the many expressions of music while they play their way to new discoveries. There is room to touch, listen and create without being afraid of doing something wrong. Put your hand on the piano and see it play. Open a door and the stories spill out.

Michael Fjeldsøe, author of the latest major literary work about the composer, titled Carl Nielsen. En kulturhistorisk biografi (Carl Nielsen. A cultural-historical biography), and leader of Carl Nielsen Centre, a division of Museum Odense, considers curiosity and wonder to be the museum’s most important DNA.

“That’s how Carl Nielsen was – never satisfied, always on his way to the next challenge. Curious and stubborn,” he says. “When children are allowed to create, listen and explore for themselves, the museum becomes a place where inspiration arises quite naturally, and where a single visit can be the beginning of a lifelong interest in music.”
