Set in the heart of Elsinore, Butik Pause is the sort of shop people visit for more than yarn. For owner Karina Sivertsen, it is the realisation of a long-held dream shaped by a lifelong love of knitting and the calming effect of working with one’s hands. For customers, it offers guidance, inspiration and, true to its name, a pause from the rush of everyday life.

In Elsinore’s charming Bjergegade quarter, Butik Pause brings together carefully chosen yarns alongside knitting accessories, crochet tools and project bags; all selected with an eye to both quality and distinctiveness. More than anything, however, the ambition is to create an inviting little oasis of calm. “The name says a lot about what the shop is meant to be,” says Sivertsen. “Knitting should provide a pause from the rush of everyday life.”

For her, that is not just an idea attached to the shop, but something she knows from her own life. After more than 20 years in the hotel industry as a housekeeping manager, knitting was what helped her unwind when she got home. “It was my way of switching off, of letting my hands work and my head become quiet,” she says. When the opportunity arose to buy Butik Pause last November, it was, she says, a dream come true. “Suddenly, I had the chance to turn my hobby into my livelihood.”

Since taking over, Sivertsen has focused on preserving the warm atmosphere that existing customers loved while adding the products and qualities that matter most to her. The response has been strong, with local regulars pleased that the shop continues, and tourists also dropping by in large numbers. Many come to Elsinore to visit the UNESCO-listed Kronborg Castle, and then step into the shop looking for Danish yarn to take home instead of a conventional souvenir. Locals, meanwhile, often come as much for help as for shopping. A table in the middle of the store is frequently used for exactly that purpose – whether by beginners, knitters with a problem in a pattern, or crocheters in need of encouragement. “The best part of having the shop is helping people,” Sivertsen says. “It is wonderful when someone comes in frustrated and leaves again with the feeling that now they can do it.”
