Surrounded by the stillness of Lake Ungurys and the deep forests of Lithuania’s Aukštadvaris Regional Park, the beautiful design of Esperanza Lake Resort reflects a genuine nature-first philosophy. Set on eleven hectares of private land, Esperanza Lake Resort feels like a calm, self-contained world. Guests can choose between 28 minimalist, nature-led rooms or two secluded villas, all designed to draw the outdoors in through soft textures, natural materials and windows framing the lake or forest. In winter, the landscape grows still, and snow-covered trails and scenic sauna sessions create a sense of calm hard to come by. “Winter is perhaps the most magical season here,” says sales manager, Aurelija Miliauskienė. “The lake mists at sunrise, the forest turns frosted white, and guests wake to views that feel almost untouched.”

Originally built from Canadian cedar logs and shaped to sit gently within the forest line, the resort has just been fully renovated with a wabi-sabi inspired aesthetic: stone, wood, linen and muted earthy tones that echo the season outside. The intention has always been to place nature at the centre rather than the structure itself.

At the heart of the experience is the spa – a warm contrast to the crisp outdoor air. Guests move between the sauna, hammam, salt room, indoor pool and whirlpool overlooking the lake, before settling into treatments that range from classic massages to the Nuvola dry-floating bed and advanced therapies targeting sleep, circulation and deep relaxation.

Other winter activities include sledging or ice skating, and visiting the resort’s onsite animal refuge to meet the charming animals, including alpacas.

With Trakai and its island castle only a short drive away, and Vilnius’ UNESCO-listed Old Town architecture within easy reach, guests can also combine peaceful seclusion with culture and city life. “The historic Trakai Castle, set on its own island, is one of Lithuania’s most iconic sights – particularly atmospheric when surrounded by snow and mist,” says Aurelija. Yet most find themselves drawn back to the quiet rhythm of the lake, where the coldest months can be transformed into the most comforting time of year.
