Nestled in the dramatic landscape of Hardangervidda, Halne Fjellstugu has welcomed guests for almost a century. Offering rustic stays and tailor-made getaways in the Norwegian highlands, the team invites travellers to slow down, reconnect with nature and embrace a mountain way of life.

Originally built in 1933 as a simple mountain farm offering overnight shelter for passing travellers, Halne Fjellstugu is rich in history and traditions. Over the years, the family-run business evolved into a dedicated inn known for comfortable lodgings and hearty meals.

Halne entered a new chapter when Geirmund Tormodsgard and Ingar Dalen took over as owners in 2016. Over the past ten years, the pair have worked tirelessly to preserve the inn’s unique character while continuing to improve the guest experience. “This is a lifestyle for us,” says Tormodsgard. “When we took over, Halne was well-run with a great reputation for good food and hospitality. It’s been a joy to continue building on this heritage and keeping local food traditions alive using the natural ingredients of Hardangervidda.”

In its humble beginnings, Halne provided a safe place to stay for those travelling between east and west, its location by the fjord making it a convenient resting place before continuing the journey. “The word ‘halne’ means halfway, and this has been a natural stopover for travellers for centuries,” Tormodsgard explains.

Today, Halne offers a range of accommodation options to suit different budgets and types of stays, combining its historic charm with modern comforts. Guests can choose from room types, apartments and cabins ranging from simple and rustic to well-positioned lodges with panoramic views.

“There’s something for everyone,” Tormodsgard says. “Whether it’s a quick stop on the way somewhere, a child-friendly family holiday, an active getaway with friends or a unique experience in a modern mountain suite, we have options for every traveller.”

A taste of Hardangervidda

In this traditional mountain region, people have always relied on the natural ingredients of the changing seasons. At Halne, using locally sourced food is a way of life… And the land certainly provides. Wild game such as moose and deer are key components of many dishes, fantastic fishing conditions ensures plenty of fresh fish, and wild lingonberries, blueberries, cloudberries, herbs and more are foraged in the area.

The menu is built on high-quality seasonal produce and focused on authentic, homemade dishes. The signature dish is wild trout caught in the clear waters of Halnefjorden, just a stone’s throw away. “It’s fantastic to be able to serve our guests real mountain trout, fresh as can be – fished from the lake 200 metres away and put straight into the chef’s pan,” Tormodsgard enthuses.

Dedicated to celebrating the traditions and flavours of the area, the team at Halne source cheese from local small-scale producers, and guests can enjoy the delicious cider, fruit and berries that the Hardanger region in Western Norway is famous for.

Halne is a popular destination for company trips, conferences and special events such as weddings, birthdays and family reunions. Alongside dedicated meeting rooms with modern AV equipment, groups have a range of teambuilding activities at their hands.

Guests can also take part in courses teaching traditional crafts such as making ‘rakfisk’ (fermented trout) to take home. “We want our guests to experience the joys of mountain life,” Tormodsgard says. “This is such a unique place – it’s honest, real and authentic.”

A wild, living landscape

The largest mountain plateau in Europe, Hardangervidda, is located more than 1,000 metres above sea level with vast open spaces. It is one of Norway’s most remarkable natural landscapes, known for its dramatic, untamed nature; from rugged mountain terrain to green valleys, sparkling waterfalls and peaceful lakes, to the breathtaking Hardangerjøkulen glacier.

“The first thing that struck me about Halne was its remarkable contrasts – the landscapes and seasons are fascinating to experience,” Tormodsgard says. “We want to share this special place and give our guests a taste of everything that Hardangervidda has to offer.”

Hardangervidda is a diverse and sought-after destination. Plenty of interesting activities and experiences await visitors, ranging from excellent hikes and skiing, fishing expeditions, boat trips, berry foraging and much more. Tormodsgard recommends the 45-minute hike to Halnekollen, which offers an incredible view of the entire plateau – from Gaustatoppen mountain in the southeast to Hardangerjøkulen glacier in the west and Hallingskarvet mountain range in the north.

With its remote location and minimal light pollution, Halne has some of Norway’s best conditions for stargazing. “This is the perfect place if you want to experience the magic of nature. The peace and stillness you find here is unlike any other.”

Hardangervidda’s Alpine climate supports a rich diversity of plants and wildlife – in fact, it is home to Europe’s oldest and largest remaining population of wild reindeer. Tormodsgard and his team are deeply committed to protecting the natural environment and its abundant wildlife. “I hope our guests come away with a deeper understanding of the importance of looking after our incredible nature,” he adds. “This is one of the few remaining natural areas in Norway, and it’s crucial that we preserve it.”
