Nestled deep in the forests of Bergslagen lies a destination where history, nature and luxury exist in perfect harmony. Together, Loka Brunn Hotel & Spa and Grythyttans Gästgivaregård offer guests what can only be described as the best of two worlds: world-class gastronomy and relaxing spa facilities combined with history, healing waters and complete tranquillity.
From magical lakes and forest trails to historic wine cellars and Nordic wellness rituals, a visit to the Bergslagen area of Sweden is not just another hotel stay or spa weekend. It is a complete experience rooted in Swedish nature and centuries of unique traditions. “Loka Brunn Hotel & Spa and Grythyttans Gästgivaregård are located approximately ten minutes apart and both represent experiences unlike any other. They’re designed to bring out the defining features of this area: the water, forests, serenity, and the rich history,” says Marie Dahlgren, CEO of Loka Brunn Spa & Hotel.

A living destination with vibrant history
The history of Loka Brunn Spa & Hotel stretches back to the 16th century, when the healing properties of the natural spring water first became known. Over time, the spa town grew into one of Sweden’s most celebrated health resorts, attracting visitors seeking rest and recovery. The area has been frequented by royalties on several occasions and in 1761, King Adolf Fredrik visited Loka to cure his severe migraines with the famous spring water and warm mud treatments. His son, Gustav III, enjoyed the area so much that he had his own house built there, Kungsbyggnaden, which is still in use today.

Despite its remarkable history, Loka Brunn is far from a museum frozen in time. Today, the property functions as a modern meeting place and includes 54 individual houses spread across the grounds. “The identity of Loka Brunn is naturally rooted in the place. We don’t need to build a new narrative, but simply continue to bring out the unique features that have been cultivated in this area for centuries,” says Dahlgren.

Water, forest and stone
The surrounding forests, lakes and dramatic landscapes have inspired every aspect of the experience, particularly the Vattensalongen spa. “Vattensalongen was inspired by Murstensdalen, a nearby valley known for its dark forest lakes, waterfalls, steep cliffs and deep ravines. This summer we will launch Loka Nordic Spa, which is a holistic experience designed to give guests an authentic experience of what this area has to offer,” Dahlgren continues.

The newly launched spa concept Nordic Zen is a collection of treatments inspired by local traditions that date back hundreds of years. The new treatments, developed in collaboration with luxury skincare company Kerstin Florian, includes both facial and body treatments inspired by Swedish nature and locally sourced ingredients unique to the area. “Water, pine needle oil and mud are reasons why Loka became a spa destination in the first place. The Nordic Zen treatments are an exploration of these elements, aimed at capturing the very soul of Loka Brunn,” Dahlgren explains.
Various ingredients, such as juniper, sea buckthorn, and pine needle oil, are combined with methods and tools, such as the locally sourced organic mud, linen cloths and hot stones, to bring out an experience connecting the guests with Loka’s healing traditions.

Gastronomy in extraordinary settings
Gastronomy is at the centre of Grythyttans Gästgivaregård. This boutique hotel, dating back to 1641, consists of 21 buildings and combines historic charm with refined gastronomy and exceptional hospitality. Guests can choose between two-course dinners or elaborate seven-course tasting menus paired with carefully selected wines from the property’s greatest treasure: a wine cellar hidden inside historic stone vaults dating back to the 17th century. The cellar features both the classics of the Old World alongside wines from the New World, reflecting the team’s own experience and passion for international wine culture.

Both Loka Brunn and Grythyttans Gästgivaregård focus on classic French cuisine with influences from other international kitchens, always with a strong emphasis on local Swedish ingredients. Wild game and seasonal produce from the local area often appear on the menu, creating a strong connection between plate and nature.
Luxury in the wilderness
One of the most unique experiences available at Loka Brunn is Loka on Lake – an exclusive floating accommodation concept that allows guests to spend the night not just by, but on the water. The luxurious suites include panoramic lake views, a private sauna, a dock and even a rowing boat.
Whether guests arrive for fine dining, wine tastings, wellness weekends, or corporate retreats, the common thread remains the same: forest, nature and water. It is in this balance that the best of two worlds is brought together in the heart of Bergslagen.
