One of Sweden’s most prestigious steakhouses celebrates its 60th anniversary this year. Mando Steakhouse & Bar is nothing less than an institution, with its iconic copper interior, diverse clientele, and nearly two million plank steaks served. When in Malmö, make sure not to miss this restaurant with its well-deserved cult status.

In an ever-changing world, Mando Steakhouse & Bar in Malmö is somewhat of a reassuring constant. Established in 1966, the restaurant takes pride in its heritage. “At Mando, you’re in safe hands,” says Marco Antonio, co-owner since 2002. “Here, our customers always know what to expect and they won’t leave disappointed.”

Mando’s founder, Tore Lauritzson, was a well-known entrepreneur. His restaurant in the heart of Malmö, with elegant copper décor by interior designer Yngve Elland and bar stools designed by the legendary Arne Jacobsen, attracted attention from the media and celebrities, and quickly established a loyal and diverse local following.

The menu at Mando has remained pretty much unchanged, still with a focus on serving high-quality locally sourced meat. “We only use premium local produce, mostly from farms in the Skåne region, and we tenderise the meat ourselves,” says Marco Antonio.

The famous Mandoplankan, a steak served on an oak board, is a sure hit. In fact, this dish has been a highlight on the menu since 1975. Currently, around 1.7 million juicy sirloin steaks have been prepared and served on wooden boards with the restaurant’s own béarnaise sauce, fresh mixed salad, crispy onion rings and golden fries.

“Our history is an important part of the concept, and admittedly we haven’t made many drastic changes over the years,” says Marco Antonio. “But we’re also looking to the future with anticipation. For instance, we have fantastic sommeliers and a curated wine list, and we also offer a range of popular weekly cocktails. It’s all about managing, improving and refining Mando for the future.”

This year, Mando celebrates its 60th anniversary. Customers can expect a cult-worthy celebration, for instance with special offerings during Malmö Pride from 1 to 4 July, Malmöfestivalen from 7 to 14 August, and, of course, on the restaurant’s actual anniversary, 12 October.
