Rooted in biology and shaped by the patterns of the natural world, Rikke Darling’s art moves between botanical forms, abstraction and science, exploring how humans remain inseparable from nature. From original paintings and hand-painted vases to expansive murals, her distinctive work has found its way into homes, hospitals and public spaces – including the triple Michelin-starred restaurant Geranium.

In Darling’s work, branching forms, cellular structures and botanical shapes weave into fluid compositions, creating images that feel at once familiar and abstract. “I’ve always been drawn to the places where things connect – where a cell structure echoes a forest canopy, or where a botanical form finds its way into an architectural space. That’s where my art begins,” says Darling.

Based in Copenhagen, with a studio and gallery on Østerbro, Darling has worked as a visual artist for more than two decades, following an earlier education in fashion design and illustration. Today, her practice spans paintings, murals and artistic objects, while her membership of the international SciArt Initiative reflects her interest in the meeting point between art, biology and science.

The unique composition of her work has also led to appreciation within the healthcare industry, and her work is found at several of Denmark’s major hospitals, where the healing and uplifting effect of nature and art has a true impact.

The relationship between art and its surroundings becomes especially tangible in Darling’s murals. At Geranium, edible wild plants from the Danish landscape wind lightly across walls and the ceiling alongside insects, complementing the restaurant’s Nordic interior while reflecting the natural balance behind the food we eat. Her hand-painted vases extend the same visual language into three dimensions, allowing the artwork to become part of everyday life.

“I’m fascinated by the structures, repetitions, textures and interconnected systems found in nature – from botanical forms and organic patterns to rocks, moss, flowing water and the changing landscapes of the north,” says Darling. “For me, nature is not simply something to depict. It’s a source of patterns, moods and ideas that I translate into my own visual language.”
