In the heart of Trondheim, a cosy neighbourhood café lures you in with the irresistible aroma of freshly baked waffles, rich chocolate, delicious crêpes and an incredibly warm atmosphere. A family business with roots stretching back generations, SweetGate welcomes every customer like an old friend.

While SweetGate first opened its doors in Trondheim in 2019, the story behind the café began more than a century earlier. Stretching back to 1890 in the Middle East, the Albizreh family’s ancestors set out on a confectionary odyssey, crafting chocolates, marzipan, dried fruits and delicate confections.

Five generations later, the family made a brave decision to cross seas and establish a new life in an icy new land, and once here, they wanted to bring a piece of their joyful sweet making heritage to the streets of Trondheim. “It’s always been a part of the family tradition to make sweets, so we wanted to continue that,” says manager Ahmad Nour Albizreh.

SweetGate started modestly, offering handmade macarons, chocolates and cupcakes. Since then, the menu has grown to include a selection of local favourites, like exciting waffle and crêpe variants, speciality drinks and beautifully decorated cakes and pastries.

“When we curate our counters and menus, we focus on making things that people genuinely want to eat, as well as something that will leave an impression,” Albizreh explains. “While we have the traditional, homegrown favourites, we also have different alternatives, such as bubble waffles and trendy sweets like Dubai chocolate or unique, fruit-shaped cakes.” In addition to cakes, they are known for their delicious ice creams, which include scoops, soft serve and other popular ice cream dishes.

Everything is prepared both for the café counter and for customers who wish to take a little bit of sweetness home with them. Whether looking for something light and fun to brighten your day, or in need of custom-made celebration cakes and decorative chocolates for special occasions, the café stretches itself to accommodate. “We want the customers who come in to feel like they’re a part of our family, which is why we try our best to establish a good and accommodating atmosphere,” says Albizreh.

Looking ahead, the SweetGate family plans to expand the menu and introduce savoury lunch dishes and filled crêpes alongside the café’s growing selection of sweet treats. But despite new ideas and evolving tastes, they remain committed to sharing generations of craftsmanship, hospitality and genuine care. “Visitors should feel like guests rather than customers, so when you’re stopping by for a morning coffee, meeting friends over dessert, or bringing children for an afternoon treat, we’re always down for a friendly chat!”
