Looking for powdery peaks this winter? For long, Geilo has been, and continues to be, the go-to destination for families, adventure-seekers, and international travellers seeking a complete winter experience, grounded in nature, tradition and high-quality alpine offerings.

Arriving in Geilo in mid-winter feels like stepping into a snow globe brought to life. At 800 metres above sea level and embraced by the vast landscapes of Hallingskarvet and Hardangervidda, this historic mountain village has long been one of Norway’s classic ski destinations.

“Geilo has long traditions as a skiing destination,” says Unni Nymoen Waldal of SkiGeilo AS. “For international guests, the combination of solid ski experiences, striking nature and simple accessibility makes it both a safe and complete choice.”

Positioned between two national parks, the village offers an immediate sense of mountain freedom yet remains uniquely accessible via both road and rail. Winters here are long and reliable, from the first snowfall to the bright days of spring. “There are varied terrains, a long season and solid facilities, making it convenient for Norwegian and international visitors alike,” says Waldal.

And if that is not enough, Geilo has been crowned Norway’s Best Ski Resort seven years in a row and was recently listed among Europe’s top 20 ski destinations by Condé Nast Traveller.
Here, the experience is as much about being together as it is about skiing. Couples get to enjoy romantic sights, children celebrate small victories on the slopes, and evenings are spent gathering around a fireplace or enjoying a casual dinner with the snow falling outside. Geilo is a place for creating lasting memories.

Winter at full strength

January is when Geilo settles fully into its winter rhythm. The slopes are crisp, the air is bright, and the mountain atmosphere is at its purest. Families find gentle spaces to learn, with free on-snow activities such as kids’ races and themed events that fill the days with laughter. More experienced skiers can explore varied terrain across both sides of the valley, linked conveniently by the resort’s free ski bus.

“Alpine skiing is excellent, with well-prepared slopes ranging from wide, family-friendly runs to more challenging terrain. Families will also find a selection of free activities such as KidsRenn, ChildrensDisco on the slopes and Kids SkiPatrol,” says Waldal. “The area also offers an extensive network of cross-country trails, suitable for both relaxed touring and more intense training. For those wanting something beyond alpine skiing, you can go dog sledding or perhaps enjoy a snowmobile ride or try tobogganing.”

Not a fan of the mountainous rush? No worries! Many hotels offer spa and wellness facilities, ideal after a long day outdoors. And as the sun sets, the village shifts gently into social mode, with after-ski gatherings, mountain dining and fireside evenings that give Geilo its warm, convivial character.

“Alpine is often the big attraction, but there are always plenty of activities, events, and social life – perfect for a big group of people with different needs. No matter what, Geilo has something special for everyone,” Waldal adds.

A year-round experience

Unlike a lot of large commercial ski resorts, the village of Geilo exudes a sense of calm, making it easy to relax without giving up excitement. Free ski buses shuttle visitors between slopes and lodges, while restaurants and mountain cafés invite moments of pause and connection. Families can move at their own pace, enjoying gentle runs or structured children’s activities, while adults can weave in wellness, social gatherings, or early morning slopes followed by a long breakfast watching the mountains wake.

“Beyond our reputation as a hub for nature and adventure, Geilo also offers plenty for travellers seeking relaxation, shopping, or local culinary experiences,” says Waldal. Visitors can enjoy a wide range of dining options, from cosy restaurants in town to mountain lodges with breathtaking views. Wine bars perched at the top of the slopes add an extra touch of sophistication, making it easy to combine alpine adventures with leisurely indulgence.

Culture and history enthusiasts are also well catered for. Geilojordet Museum offers a glimpse into the past with farmhouses from the 1700s, opportunities to enjoy traditional porridge, and live theatre performances that bring history to life. The Fejko Cultural Heritage Site delves even further back, showcasing relics from historic and prehistoric times, including Viking-era burial mounds, coal pits, ironworks, and an old hay barn. These sites offer a vivid sense of the area’s rich past and are a true treat for visitors interested in cultural heritage.

“Other notable attractions include the Old Hol Church, Geilo Culture Church, Dagali Museum, and Huldreskogen, an enchanting outdoor art installation by Margrete Birkeland inspired by the mythical huldrefolket.”

What makes Geilo unique is its versatility. Unlike other mountain destinations that focus on one season or activity, Geilo has something for everyone, year-round. Families can combine gentle slopes with cosy mountain lunches, culture buffs can trace history across museums and heritage sites, and anyone seeking relaxation can enjoy spa treatments or a quiet moment in the snow. With a legacy of more than 150 years in hospitality, Geilo blends tradition, adventure, and modern comforts, making it the place to make memories for generations to come.
