Delizia: Make your own ice cream – for a day, or maybe for life?

When asked what they want to do when they grow up, many children might say they want to make ice cream. They imagine themselves making all their favourite flavours, coming up with new, exciting combinations and sharing them with family and friends. But they don’t have to wait, at Delizia they can try making their own ice cream now.
Since 2004, Delizia has been making Italian ice cream – in Stavanger. Husband and wife, Mark and Helgunn Ravonsheed, wanted to do it right and travelled to Italy to learn everything they could about Italian ice cream making. They bought all the necessary equipment in Italy and brought it back to Stavanger.
Over 20 years later, they have the capacity to make 80 flavours of dairy ice cream and 40 flavours of vegan ice cream. Enough to fulfil any ice cream lover’s dreams. The production is small-scale and semi-automatic. Part of the production, e.g. chopping chocolate or nuts, is done by hand, while churning the ice cream is done by machines.

Ice cream making is perfect for a kid’s birthday party. Something the owners also enjoy. “The best moments at work are with the kids,” says Helgunn Ravonsheed. “Seeing them making their own ice cream, they are so proud.”
Participants get to mix their own ice cream and choose a flavour. They get to watch the magical process as the ice cream machine transforms it into smooth ice cream. The best part is, of course, test tasting.
The next step is to decorate their box of ice cream. There is a variety of sauces, add-ins, toppings and sprinkles to choose from. Afterwards, they can enjoy as much ice cream as they like, before taking their own creation home.
But, making ice cream is too much fun to be restricted to children only. As a fun activity that encourages creativity, it is great for team building too.
The next chapter
After more than 20 years of spreading joy with their ice creams, the couple are thinking about retirement. But they don’t want to close Delizia. “It would be great if someone with a passion for ice cream could take over,” says Mark Ravonsheed. “For anyone creative, who loves ice cream and has an entrepreneurial spirit, taking over Delizia could be the chance of a lifetime.”
