When Karlsson Arkitekter won the competition in 2010 to design a new psychiatric hospital in the Zealand region of Denmark, they had a clear goal: to create a house that supports the patients’ recovery process and helps them return to a normal life again. Today, a few months after the hospital was formally inaugurated by the Danish Crown Princess and Health Minister, thechallenges are of a completely different nature: “Our biggest concern right now is that patients don’t want to leave the hospital again because it’s of such high quality,” smiles Christian Karlsson, architect and founder of Copenhagen-based Karlsson Arkitekter.
