Tucked away in the lush, green parkland of northern Germany lies a hidden gem that promises an unprecedented holiday experience: Resort Baumgeflüster. Ranked among the Top Ten Treehouse Resorts worldwide by Departures magazine, this unique forest retreat invites guests to reconnect with nature and indulge in tranquillity with all the comforts of a luxury hideaway.
Sleeping in a treehouse is a childhood dream for many, but it is not always possible due to a lack of space or resources. Fortunately, Resort Baumgeflüster offers guests the opportunity to enjoy safe, comfortable treehouse stays surrounded by nature. In a hidden location, by the idyllic spa town of Bad Zwischenahn in the Ammerland region of Lower Saxony, just 40 minutes from the North Sea, lies the Resort Baumgeflüster – The Hidden Treehouse Resort. It is renowned for its innovative concept of treehouse-style accommodations that blend harmoniously into the surrounding forest.

Large enough for luxury, small enough for individuality
Owner Insa Otteken reveals the exact location of the well-hidden spot in the forest to her guests only upon arrival. In a clearing in the forest, the guests discover four luxurious, solid-built wooden treehouses, proudly standing on stilts approximately 4 metres high among beech and oak trees over 100 years old.
These are not the rustic treehouses of childhood dreams, but rather meticulously designed lodges that combine luxury with sustainability. Inspired by famous architect Le Corbusier, the treehouses were built entirely from untreated, breathable larch wood, thus making them ideal for allergy sufferers. “The scent of the open-pored larch wood is unique – it calms the pulse and lowers the heart rate,” Insa Otteken explains. “Many guests report that they haven’t slept so deeply and restfully in a long time.”

Each of the four treehouses has a special interior design theme, from the Alps to Africa. The treehouses feature floor-to-ceiling windows with breathtaking views of the trees. The natural light floods the interiors, creating a seamless connection between the inside and the outside. Each suite, measuring approximately 40 square metres, accommodates up to four people and features stylish furnishings. In addition to comfortable beds and a private designer bathroom with underfloor heating, each suite features a spacious terrace, ideal for watching squirrels, pheasants, hares, and deer. In spring, even fawns visit. Bird lovers marvel at the variety of birds, and ornithologists are particularly fascinated by the rare goldcrest.
“We deliberately refrained from adding TVs and radios to the treehouses,” explains Otteken. “The view of the forest – unobstructed and unadulterated – brings peace.” Additionally, as a perceived ‘Dark Sky Place’ with no sources of artificial light around the treehouses, guest can look forward to spectacular starry skies on cloudless nights.

Glamping with all five senses
The resort was founded as the first high-end treehouse resort in Germany, based on the conviction that time spent in nature has a profoundly positive effect on mind, body, and soul. This unique philosophy shapes every aspect of the guest experience. From the moment you enter the grounds, you are invited to unwind and let the rhythm of the forest wash over you. As a coolcation place, the treehouses remain pleasantly cool even during hot summers thanks to the natural shade of the trees.
For adventurers and explorers, the Ammerland parkland – Europe’s largest tree nursery and rhododendron growing area – offers numerous opportunities for hiking, cycling, and birdwatching. The nearby Park of Gardens showcases a diverse plant life across more than 140,000 square metres, while the idyllic Zwischenahner Meer lake is perfect for water sports, swimming, sailing, or simply a relaxing picnic on its shores. Those seeking a more tranquil experience can enjoy cycling, sailing on the nearby North Sea, observing seals, or taking a mudflat hike to the East Frisian Islands.

Large windows offer breathtaking views.
Although the resort does not have a traditional restaurant, it offers its guests a small organic breakfast basket delivered to their suites each morning, including freshly baked, still-warm rolls. For dinner, the nearby spa town of Bad Zwischenahn offers a variety of charming restaurants. The eel, in particular, is a favourite dish among many gourmets.
Art lovers will also be in their element: artist Andreas Herrmann lives in a building on the resort grounds and, according to Otteken, plans to combine “artistic enjoyment and culinary delights” in a new, unique concept. “Another, larger, architecturally striking solid wood house, as well as a barbecue hut with a grill kota, are also planned for 2026.”
Whether for a romantic marriage proposal, an unforgettable gift, or an extraordinary break, in a world that often feels overwhelming, Resort Baumgeflüster stands as a testament to the healing power of nature – forest bathing included. Many who have stayed here describe it as magical and their enthusiasm is evident in their lovingly designed guestbook entries.
