If you are looking for a relaxing weekend getaway, we have a treat for you. In the charming city of Kaunas, in the heart of Lithuania, rush-hour stress and urban inconveniences feel like a distant memory. When here, you can set your own pace.
The slow rhythm of Kaunas is first felt physically. Even on weekday mornings, people heading to the office are not rushing breathlessly – they walk leisurely and always find time for a cup of coffee with an acquaintance met unexpectedly. Taking time simply to be, to watch the city waking up, to sit on a bench along Laisvės Alėja – one of Europe’s longest pedestrian streets – is part of the Kaunas way of life.

In the heart of Kaunas’ Old Town lies Santaka Park, where rivers Nemunas and Neris meet. In Žaliakalnis, the century-old Oak Grove invites visitors to wander, while in Panemunė a refreshing pine forest awaits. Instead of spending an hour in a shopping centre, perhaps you prefer a romantic walk along Kaunas Lagoon, admiring the baroque walls of Pažaislis Monastery, where time seems to stand still?

In Kaunas, heritage dating back to the Middle Ages blends naturally with its modernist architecture, which is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The city is also home to numerous museums, and the historic parts welcome visitors to former homes of artists and public figures who once lived here, much like an open-air museum, telling fascinating stories both on the inside and the outside.

With a diverse cultural programme, boredom never sets in. Music lovers are in for a treat, as Darius and Girėnas Stadium regularly hosts global superstars such as André Rieu, Lenny Kravitz, A$AP Rocky and Pitbull. The main entertainment venues are located right in the city centre, for instance, the charming cinema Romuva with its elegant façade and interior, the oldest in Lithuania.

Apart from having a rich history and culture, Kaunas is a city of stylish cafés and restaurants. The gastronomy scene is full-flavoured, with local specialities as well as Michelin-star restaurants. During a visit in this city, your taste buds will be delighted. Make sure not to miss the legendary farmers’ market near Kaunas Castle, which is open on Saturdays.

As you have probably noticed, everything in Kaunas comes down to freedom. The freedom to choose – a slow morning, a long lunch or an energetic evening; quiet time in nature or summer discoveries in the city. Kaunas also offers the luxury of not choosing at all – simply taking it all in.
