Nestled in the marshlands of Southern Jutland, where birds fill the sky and the horizon seems endless, artist Anne Juul Christophersen has created a world that is entirely her own. This autumn, you can experience her largest exhibition to date, S☉L, where she explores the connection between humans, animals, nature and the shared source from which life begins.

Growing up in an artistic family, Anne Juul has painted and drawn her whole life. She works from her 100-square-metre studio on the farm she shares with her husband, in the marshlands surrounding the UNESCO-listed Wadden Sea.

“Living here means that you experience nature every single day. The geese, the wind, the changing light, the enormous skies. Over time you realise that we’re not above or separate from nature. We’re part of it,” Anne Juul says.

This sense of belonging lies at the heart of her artistic practice. Her paintings, sculptures and ink drawings explore the relationship between people, animals and nature, inviting viewers to reflect on ideas of connection, belonging and shared existence.

Many of Anne Juul’s works feature the same recognisable figures: a young girl accompanied by a bear or, sometimes, a wolf. Rather than repeating herself, she compares the process to directing a theatre production. “They’re almost like my actors,” she smiles. “I’ve created a universe where I can tell all the stories I want to tell. Every work becomes another scene, another conversation.”

S☉L

This autumn, Anne Juul presents the largest exhibition of her career. Titled S☉L – using the ancient symbol for the sun at the heart of the Danish word ‘sol’ (meaning sun) – the exhibition opens at Spritten in Aalborg on 3 October and runs until 31 October. Created in collaboration with Galerie Wolfsen, it will fill 657 square metres with paintings, sculptures and ink drawings.

The title is simple yet layered with meaning. “The symbol is just a circle with a point in the middle, but it contains so much. It speaks about a centre, a shared origin. Everything begins there,” says the artist.

That idea of connectedness runs through the entire exhibition. Rather than presenting individual artworks in isolation, visitors move through a sequence of spaces where the works relate to one another as parts of a larger whole. Together with gallerist Kent Wolfsen, whom Anne Juul has worked with for more than a decade, the raw industrial halls at Spritten will be transformed into an immersive artistic journey.

The exhibition includes monumental paintings measuring up to 2 x 3.5 metres, alongside sculptures and a large collection of expressive ink drawings. While the ink drawings continue to use Anne Juul’s familiar visual language, the drawings introduce a newer series titled FAVN, where roots, hearts, bodies and nature merge into almost abstract forms.

Although the media differ, they all explore the same underlying idea: that everything is connected. Anne Juul describes it through the image of a hologram: “If you break a hologram into a thousand pieces, every single piece still contains the whole image. I think we’re a little like that. Every person, every animal and every part of nature carries something of the whole within it.”

A mirror into the soul

Alongside her visual art, Anne Juul has published a poetry collection and books connected to her work. Words and images allow her to explore the same questions in different ways: where stories begin, how nature shapes us, and what connects one living being to another. “I see forms, patterns and stories everywhere. I grew up with Astrid Lindgren, Tolkien and books filled with different adventures and worlds, which is reflected in my art,” says Anne Juul.

That connectedness is also reflected in the way audiences respond to her work. Her art mirrors something within ourselves and it is not unusual for viewers to become emotional when looking at her paintings. Her art has the ability to go beyond each piece’s individual subject and evoke something more universal. “There’s something that resonates and touches something timeless in my work. I keep working with those deeper layers.”

Her paintings, sculptures and ink drawings do not separate people from animals or the surrounding landscape. Instead, they invite visitors to enter a world in which everything shares the same origin, and even the smallest fragment carries something of the whole.
