Ark4lab of Architecture is a laboratory of ideas where contemporary architecture emerges from research, experimentation, and a deep understanding of place, form and human experience. Less interested in architecture that simply looks impressive in photographs, the team creates spaces that people experience, remember and make their own.

Based in Thessaloniki, Greece, Ark4lab of Architecture is devoted to contemporary architectural design and research. Founded by George Tyrothoulakis and Evdokia Voudouri, architects and partners in life, the practice was initially conceived as an open architecture laboratory – a place where architecture could be explored through research, experimentation and, above all, through the search for authenticity.

“From the beginning, our intention wasn’t to establish a predefined architectural style, but to approach every project as a new question,” says Tyrothoulakis. “We wanted each building or interior to emerge from its particular context, its users, its materiality and the ideas behind it, rather than from a recognisable visual signature.”

The architects’ approach is deliberately context-driven rather than style-driven. “We don’t want our projects to look the same. Instead, we search for the character that each project can develop from its own circumstances,” says Tyrothoulakis. “Every commission is an opportunity for research, exploring what’s already there, what’s needed and what can become something meaningful.”

Over the years, Ark4lab has evolved into a multidisciplinary practice working across different scales and geographies. While still based in Thessaloniki, the team works increasingly internationally, engaging with different cultures, climates, materials and ways of living.

Awarded coffee shop and stunning villas

An early project in which Ark4lab explored the idea of the interior as a social and urban experience is the coffee shop Black Drop in Kavala. “Rather than designing simply a coffee shop, we wanted to create a space that would interact with the city and encourage people to meet, observe and participate,” says Tyrothoulakis. Black Drop received the BIG SEE Interior Design Award 2018 – Winner, Hospitality, and remains an important step in the evolution of Ark4lab’s approach to materiality and human interaction. “It also allowed us to treat furniture, materials and architectural elements as one continuous language.”

A project exploring the relationship between a contemporary home and its natural surroundings is Villa TaL in Thessaloniki. Developed along a linear axis, the design of the house uses large openings and continuous floor surfaces to blur the boundaries between interior and exterior. The design reflects a contemporary Mediterranean way of living, where architecture is not imposed on the landscape but becomes part of it. Villa TaL received the BIG SEE Architecture Award 2023 – Winner, Residential Houses.

Also located in Thessaloniki, Villa PieL continues the exploration of the relationship between architecture, landscape and everyday life, but at a larger scale. Large openings and seamless transitions between interior and exterior create a fluid relationship with the garden and pool. At the same time, the composition protects the privacy of the residents. “This project received the BIG SEE Architecture Award 2025 – Winner, Residential Houses, and symbolises our belief that a home should create not only functional spaces, but a particular quality and experience of living,” says the architect.

Stellar and growing international presence

Stellar Beauty Salon in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, represents a more recent stage of Ark4lab’s practice and growing international presence in the Middle East. Inspired by celestial geometry, orbit and rhythm, the design uses fluid curves, circular openings and an elliptical skylight to create a sense of movement and continuity. As explained by the architect, the project was conceived as an immersive spatial experience rather than simply a branded commercial interior. “Stellar echoes our continuing interest in materiality, light and the emotional experience of architecture,” he says. The project received the BIG SEE Interior Design Award 2026 – Winner, Interior / Retail, Saudi Arabia.

Looking to the future, Tyrothoulakis sees one of the challenges to be using technology intelligently without allowing it to replace intuition, craftsmanship and human interaction: “While digital tools can expand what architects can imagine and produce, architecture ultimately remains a physical and sensory experience.” The architect also sees sustainability not simply as a technical requirement, but as a broader responsibility towards place, resources and time. Designing with the climate, understanding materials and creating buildings that can adapt and remain meaningful over time are all part of this responsibility.

“Architecture is not only about new technologies, materials or ways of constructing. It’s also about creating meaningful human experiences in an increasingly fast and digital world,” reflects Tyrothoulakis. “Our ambition is to continue offering our knowledge, our craft and our technical experience in order to design spaces that people can connect with. For us, the ultimate goal is not to create an image, but an experience.”
